LOG CABIN MEDIA BLASTING

What is Media Blasting

Media blasting is a superior method for cleaning the exterior of log homes, offering numerous benefits over traditional cleaning techniques. Using a combination of compressed air and fine media such as sand, glass beads and sometime walnut shells or corn cobs, media blasting effectively removes dirt, grime, old finishes, and even stubborn stains from the logs. Unlike harsh chemicals or power washing, media blasting is gentle on the wood surface, minimizing the risk of damage like splintering or warping. It also provides a more uniform and thorough clean, reaching into crevices and pores that may be difficult to access otherwise. Additionally, media blasting is an eco-friendly option as it does not involve harmful chemicals or excessive water usage, making it a preferred choice for log home maintenance and restoration projects.

Corn cob or Walnut shells

We don’t recommend using this product anymore. This was what most people used 10+ years ago. We have since figured out that these medias introduce some additional risks to the process. They have been found to transfer proteins and sugars to the log walls and can promote growth like molds and mildews under the stain. These medias can absorb moisture in the event that a few of them become stuck in your log checks. However, there are still a few Rare occasions where Corn Cob or Walnut shell media may be required.

We recommend and typically use crushed recycled glass. This blast media is typically a little more aggressive and does a better job Removing failed products. It is also an inert product and will not absorb moisture.

What happens to the glass?

We place 4’ cloth tarps down to collect and re-use the majority of the glass beads. We can typically filter and re-use the glass beads 2-3 times before it loses its cutting ability. Any residual sand will be gathered up or blown around and disbursed with a blower. A small percentage of it turns to dust. We have been told by some homeowners that the residual sand has actually helped aerate their soil and enhanced their soil.
